My decision to become an educator was made midway through my high school career. I loved school and learning as a child in elementary school, but unfortunately soon after the 6th grade, that love of learning diminished. I realized that it had only been because of that awkward uncomfortable phase all pre-teens go through, and I slowly began to enjoy school once again during my freshman year of high school. It became apparent to me that learning needs to be fun, and that students need to be motivated to learn. My main goal as an elementary/special educator is to make children want to learn and to love to learn. I want to have a positive influence on every student and for them to have the right mindset for success in school, which will carry on throughout their lives. As an elementary teacher, I am responsible for molding each individual young student, impressing upon them how important an education is, and to convey this philosophy in a way that is fun and motivating, ensuring that each student is challenged and reaches their full potential. Commitment to these ideals is very important to me. I believe that most schools do their best to insure that their students succeed, even with today’s societal challenges, with various programs for character education, bullying prevention, and drugs and alcohol awareness to name a few.

The role of technology in schools and education today is becoming greater and greater, as the learners of today are so tech savvy. Being an educator of the 21st century, it is my duty and responsibility to incorporate technology within the classroom everyday. With all of the new technology that is available and used in the world today, it is an incredible tool at our fingertips to be taken advantage of in (and out of) our schools. As a teacher, I will encourage students to use and embrace it, as it is a great opportunity for children to do many things, such as create and maintain a website, for instance a blog and or a wiki page. Technology opens the doors for many other opportunities to further creativity, for thinking “outside the box”, reaching global audiences in real time, and extensive research on any topic imaginable. Whatever tools are available to me in my classroom will be used to enhance and encourage the love of learning.
